He was educated at Shrewsbury School when Samuel Butler was Headmaster; he was an outstanding pupil and was Head boy 1820-1823. He then attended St. John's College, Cambridge where he gained his degree in 1827.
He returned to Shrewsbury as Headmaster in 1836 where he remained for thirty years, during which time the school attained an unparalleled reputation for classical training. His passion and enthusiasm and the success of many of his pupils gave rise to the claim that he was the greatest classical teacher of that century.
He was appointed Regius Professor of Greek at Cambridge, and Canon of Ely in 1867, which offices he held until his death in 1889.
