Miss H M Butler Lloyd is shown as an old woman, engaged in some sort of needlework. She is seate, with a shawl round her shoulders in the role described by a headline about her in the Shrewsbury Chronicle in 1936 'Over 80 but still sewing for the poor'.
She belonged to a distinguished local family, her brother George being MP for Shrewsbury. She worked all her life for charities concerned with the welfare of girls, in particular the Girls' Friendly Society, set up to find accommodation and work for poor girls.
