- Description: Late eighteenth century oil painting entitled "Afternoon", View of Coalbrookdale, Shropshire. 1777
- Description: Coalbrookdale, Afternoon View.
The Coalbrookdale valley is viewed from a hill and the Severn is seen winding into the distance. From the right bank in the middle distance are seen the flames and smoke of iron furnaces - black smoke belches from a tall chimney. Some buildings are seen on the left bank, but much is obscured by smoke. The surrounding hills are heavily wooded. Behind farm land is shown in front of the Shropshire Hills. In the right foreground are two fashionable ladies, with red-coated man and more roughly dressed man who is possibly a guide.
